Metal Gear Solid: Philanthropy

Metal Gear Solid Philanthropy

As far an fan-made films usually go, its often an embarrassing affair. Low budget productions coupled with adolescents who figure they can achieve more then they set out to do. There’s a reason why the high-gloss of Hollywood production or the careful craftsmanship of independent features is not easy to emulate. It takes careful training, intense logistical organization, and often times some sort of studio backing.

I wouldn’t go so far as to rave over Philanthropy or even cite it as an example opposite of this dilemma, but it comes close. Created by actual film students who seemingly have the abilities to work in the commercial industry, the film overall is quite impressive and surprising. The production level emulates a mid-level TV show which is quite impressive as is. Acting seems professional as well as the costuming, staging, and mise en scene.

Macho Madness

One seriously trouble mind must be behind this rather terrifying Left 4 Dead mod. Just imagining a zombie going blood-curdling speeds towards you screaming “SNAP INTO A SLIM JIM!” Who knew that Randy Savage plus zombies would equal true horror.

WET “Shot at Love”

Not a game I’m anticipating too much, but I couldn’t help but take notice of this rather “interesting” viral video. Like with most viral promotions, it has nothing to do with the actual content of the game nor does it showcase any of its features, rather it goes for mere shock value. Here, doing it by a catchy musical number.

Two E3 Trailers: Left 4 Dead 2 & Assassin’s Creed 2

E3 2009

Assassin’s Creed was definitely a flawed game. It had clumsy gameplay mechanics, most of which were simply not utilized to its fullness. The whole premise was extremely unique but simply lacked a strong structure to hold it together. Regardless, it was an exciting gameplay experience that could be described as Prince of Persia meets GTA. This was backed by a compelling narrative that abruptly ended on a cliffhanger. Thus, it is great news that a sequel is in the works.

Sadly the trailer doesn’t show any gameplay, rather cinematic material but does reveal that it does indeed continue the events of the previous game. The main difference being, a shift from 12th century Holy Land to 15th century Renaissance Italy. The hidden blade still seems to be the prominent weapon but the trailer also reveals the presence of firearms which could dramatically shift the combat dynamics.

Of equal note, is the trailer for the sequel to Left 4 Dead. A great fps by any means and easily one of the better in recent history for online play. What was so great about it was its simple premise and the low learning curve it had compared to many others of the genre. Its a great multiplayer shooter that anyone could easily pick up and play along to.

Like the former trailer mentioned, this one lacks gameplay as well but does reveal that not much has changed. Feature-wise, it seems its pretty similar with the only glaring difference being a shift in locale to the American South. Also, at least according to the wiki, it seems this one will possibly flesh out more of a narrative and backstory which the first seemed to lack.

Both trailers are embedded after the break…

Scene from a Movie Competition

Scene from a Movie

Found out about this thanks to Row Three. From what I can gather, Game Artist held a competition for recreating famous scenes from films using game engines. The premise sounds tacky, but the results are incredibly impressive and really demonstrates how far the industry has come in regards to graphics technology. Above is the competition’s winner and quite accurately captures a scene from Blade Runner. Follow the link below to see the full results.

AVGN reviews The Odyssey

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 by Crap

James Rolfe and his AVGN persona never fails to impress. His latest webisode features a survey review of the first ever, home videogame console, The Odyssey.

Needless to say, its an utter piece of shit. With all due respect, I can’t help but still feel its existence to be completely pointless even taking into consideration a temporal context.

Max Payne 3 is coming…

Max Payne 3

Never thought we’d ever see it but, Rockstar has officially announced Max Payne 3 for release later this year. Definitely excited despite neither Remedy Entertainment nor creator Sam Lake being part of the project. In addition, from what I can gather not much has been released regarding the game except that they seem to be going the Solid Snake route with Payne. From the only image release above, it seems Max is going to be aged greatly and in a completely different element. As long as they keep the gameplay mechanics from the franchise in effect, I could care less what they do with the story. Links below…

Ragnar Tørnquist’s “The Secret World” trailer

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 by Crap

The Secret World posterThe Secret World is an upcoming MMORPG from Funcom that will be released for the XBox 360 and PC. It uses the same engine as Funcom’s previous MMO, Age of Conan and will lack the traditional “level grinding” system of so many games of this particular genre. It apparently doesn’t even have a class system and is rounding up to be a more casual venture then serious gaming.

While MMO’s rarely draw my interest nor do even single-player RPGs of late, I am mildly intrigued by this one. The gameplay and what little information has been revealed is inconsequential. All I need to know is that Ragnar Tørnquist is helming the project as creative director. That one fact alone has me on the lookout for this particular project. His previous effort, The Longest Journey was in my opinion the best “point and click” adventure game I’ve ever played. Quite a statement when considering the large body of great LucasArts games that streamed into this genre, and that I am placing under the former.

The trailer is embedded below the break and shows only cinematics, no gameplay. Regardless its still peaked my interest for its almost satirical approach to promotion. The official site is also linked below which as of now, only has the same trailer embedded with a countdown to December 21, 2012. The date is the end of the Mayan calender and has been inaccurately been associated with the “end of the universe” by many groups….and likely is the expected release date for the game in question.
