Mouse On the Keys, Saigo no Bansan

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 by Crap

Mouse on The Keys is a unique mixture of drums and keyboard, as well as the unlikely pairing of post rock with jazz fusion. Hailing from Toyko, here is the official music video and a rather inventive performance of the opening track off their mini album, Sezession.

Ugetsu: A look at National Allegory & Post-Showa Criticism

ugetsu

This is the first in hopefully a long-going series for The Cineastes. As this is the first time we have done this, there is a lack of groundwork, tradition, or guidelines in place. Thus I personally took this opportunity to do a more holistic and brief look into the film chosen. Its not very well organized nor is it centralized into a singular theme. More so, it is in essence the notes and thoughts I gathered while watching the film put to paper.

The jist is, I touch upon a variety of things below but refrain from going into large detail. Thus its largely more informative and speculative then actually formulating conclusions based upon internal discourse. I’ve also interspersed screencaps of key frames I discuss as well as a spew of wikipedia links for further information. Of course, clicking them is optional but recommended if the topic at hand is wholly unfamiliar.

Lastly, be sure to check out the bottom of this entry to find out what the rest of the Cineastes had to say about Ugetsu.

Has the “Anime Bubble” burst?

anime bubble

via Japan Probe.

An interesting graph from an Asahi Shimbun article reporting that industry insiders are claiming that the “anime bubble has burst.” The top part with the red line shows the number of new works of anime produced each year since 2000. The bottom part shows total sales for the anime industry, with the darker blue section of each bar representing anime aimed at a general audience and the lighter colored section representing anime for kids. Both graphs show a decline since 2006.

Its not really a surprise. As a previous fan of the industry, I used to watch and follow well over twenty shows at a time in addition to a multitude of manga titles. Probably since about 3-4 years ago, anime as an industry seemed to heavily decline. What used to be an interesting and refreshing medium, seemed to quickly rely on formulaic pastiches to such an absurd level, that one could easily categorize all new productions into a small set of categorizations.

Tsukamoto is making Tetsuo 3!

tetsuo 3

Probably the best film-related news I’ve heard all year. Shinya Tsukamoto is seemingly making a return to his auteuristic cycle of body horror films with what was previously classified as Bullet Man. Via Twitch today, this code name was merely a ruse by the man to hide the fact that he is actually making a third Tetsuo film!

For better or worse as well, it will be English language and the first of the kind for Tsukamoto. More will be revealed at this year’s Cannes but as of now, it seems Tarantino might be attached in a production role, Tsukamoto himself acting as one of the leads as well as serving as the DP, editor, and writer in addition to his directing credits.

Either way, we should expect some great cyberpunk flavored metal fetishism.

Freaky Japanese Banana Ad

Seriously? WTF? Another case of advertising taking a strange turn. I’m really not sure how this is supposed to make one buy bananas. If anything, I think I might be slightly afraid of them now…
