Kristin Chenoweth on Glee (Videos)

Friday, October 2nd, 2009 by Crap

Kristin Chenoweth on GleeThe initial pilot for Glee a few months back was good enough to get me somewhat excited. Here was a potential series that was seemingly going in the opposite direction to recent successful franchises like High School Musical, and instead actually embracing Broadway. It cast Lea Michele (Spring Awakening) in the lead role with future guest stars such as John Lloyd Young (Jersey Boys) and Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked).

Needless to say, there was a definite contemporary angle but thats a given in any circumstance. This obviously meant that although there would be Broadway renditions, the majority of the material would be popular music….much of it being less than favorable. This was fine though for the large part. If Michele’s early rendition of Rihanna’s Take A Bow was any indication, I couldn’t complain. The insertion of material like Queen and Journey was also a refreshing surprise as well.

Overall though, the personal draw for the show was its potential to serve as an outlet for Broadway stars in guest role capacities. This and possibly only this was the major reason why I found myself following a a rather dull and incredibly derivative high school melodrama. Thus I faced growing disappointment as the episodes progressed.

“Spring Awakening” Upcoming Korean Production

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 by Crap

Spring Awakening KoreaDuncan Sheik & Steven Sater’s Tony-sweeping musical Spring Awakening is getting a Korean production in July. It will star Kim Mu-yeol, Cho Jung-seok, and Kim Yu-young in lead roles and subsequently will have the majority of its lyrics sung in Korean. Needless to say, I have no idea who any of them are but if the rehearsal videos are any indicator, they seem to have been extremely well cast.

An official site has been up for awhile which has two montage reels, one of which shows a glimpse into rehearsals and the newly translated Korean scripting. More importantly, there is a full video rehearsal of “Totally F*ucked” with both leads exhibiting some strong vocal and stage presence. The choreography is relatively unchanged from the original Broadway production but its definitely refreshing to see a completely new cast doing a rendition out of costume.

There is also a plethora of other full rehearsal videos of many of the musical’s number on Naver Video…but the load speeds are annoyingly slow. For those patient enough to check them out, I highly suggest you do. Otherwise, at least give a listen to “Totally F*ucked” over on the official site which suffers no load problems.

Glee Pilot, Upcoming Fox musical comedy

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009 by Crap

Glee TV

The pilot for Glee aired last night, months in advance of the series actual premiere later this year in September. The upcoming Fox show is a musical comedy which is probably an attempt to “cash-in” on the recent success of the High School Musical franchise as well as a general need for more comedies on their Fall lineup.

As the name suggests, it revolves primarily around the members of a high school glee club (choir) and the struggle for the protagonist Will Schuester, to keep the program going. In the case of this series specifically, it also refers to the general feeling of glee or pure joy that is felt when one takes part in something that one is passionate about. The series is being headed by Ryan Murphy (creator of Nip/Tuck), and stars several notable individuals.

Matthew Morrison stars as the series protagonist, a high school Spanish teacher who once won the Nationals and still holds a passion for the current glee club at his school, which is on the verge of being dissolved. Thus he jumps on the opportunity to become the new director and revitalize the program by both recruiting new members and setting the lofty goal of winning the Nationals once again. Lea Michele of Spring Awakening and Les Miserables fame also stars as the lead female member of the Glee club. She is depicted as an outcast who seemingly compensates her lack of social stature with an air or arrogance and over-confidence. Though as we already know from her impressive performance as Wendla in Spring Awakening, her confidence in musical ability is not without merit.

They are joined by a relatively quirky and diverse cast of fellow club members, faculty, and other high school cliques. The show will also supposedly feature regular guest appearances by many musical and Broadway artists such as John Lloyd Young, Victor Garber, Kristin Chenoweth, and Josh Groban.

Avenue Q at Orange County

Avenue Q Tour

Last night I got a chance to see Avenue Q on its current North American tour, currently in Orange County. Having listened to the original cast recording countless times beforehand, the experience was one of refreshing shock and enjoyment. The complexity of the puppeteering, staging, and set was far beyond what I had expected. It still boggles my mind how well synchronized the performers had to be. Many of the puppets were controlled by at least two puppeteers while simultaneously being voiced by a completely different performer who often times had to speak for multiple characters. In terms of the musical performance, its very similar to what one would hear on the original cast recording. The only obvious differences come in the characters of Gary Coleman and Trekkie Monster and in some of the more non-”sung-through” verses.

Overall though, very impressive and highly recommended. A few embedded “non-tour” clips after the break…

“Sell Out!”, a Malaysian musical comedy

Monday, March 16th, 2009 by Crap

I have to admit, I have no idea what this film is about nor do I know any technical details concerning it. I simply caught the trailer for it over on Twitchfilm the other day and it peaked my interest. The trailer itself is embedded above and the full article is linked below.

I’m not sure why the producers here went with the “all-English” route since it seems apparent that most are not fluent. Its not as awkward as say Miike’s recent Sukiyaki Western Django but I wonder why they didn’t simply do it in Malay or a combination of both. Either way it does look mildly interestingly humorous and seems to be a natural next step after a sort of re-emergence of popularity for the genre in the mainstream.

“Sita Sings the Blues” on Reel 13

Saturday, February 28th, 2009 by Crap

Sita Sings the Blues

Sita Sings the Blues is an animated feature that is almost wholly produced by Nina Paley which spins together parallel narratives infused with the music of Annette Hanshaw and the myth of The Ramayana. The animation itself is quite impressive by any means, and each narrative is given its own distinctive style.

Paley paints a retelling of the Ramayana myth that explores the antiquated and insane expectations that were expected of the female protagonist Sita, and its similarities to the her own contemporary situation. The Ramayana narrative is the most cartoonish in its depiction, which implies a sense of exaggeration on Paley’s part. The visual representation of Sita is a complete idealization in her over-the-top hourglass figure, which contrast highly to the contemporary counterpart of Nina who is seen in more realistic proportions. Probably most interesting is Paley’s addition of a narrating motif which offers direct discourse on the myth being told. Absurdities, inconsistencies, and unrealistic expectations are explored expressing a sense of critique upon these antiquated standards that still survive today.

Also of interest, is that Paley ran into copyright trouble over this film regarding the Annette Hanshaw recordings despite being public domain since the 1950s. She took out a loan of 50K to pay off the demands and is still releasing the film free of charge. While you can stream the film at an acceptable quality on Reel 13, it will be made available for download at no cost on March 7 in HD and multiple resolutions.
